How to replace a hammer handle
Material :
- -1 replacement handle
- -1 wood wedge and 1 steel wedge
- Tools required :
Saw
- -Hammer or mallet
- -Flat-ended punch or stud bolt
- -Rough file (rasp) or sand paper
- -Vise (or similar opening)
Steps to follow :
- 1- Using the saw, cut the old handle as close as possible to the hammer head, place the head across the opened vise jaws
(or similar opening). Use the flat-ended punch (or stud bolt) and hammer to drive the remaining piece of old handle out of the head.
- 2- Make a vertical saw cut into the end of the replacement handle of appproximately 1 3/4¨ (4,45 cm).
- 3- Check the fit of the handle into the head before attempting to trim it down, then if required, use the rough file (rasp) or sand paper to trim down the end of the handle, taking only a little bit off at a time. Do not remove too much wood to ensure a tight fit. Drive the handle into the head until approximately 1/2" (1,27 cm) from the shoulder of the handle.
- 4- Place the bottom end of the handle on a solid surface, insert the wood wedge in the saw cut and drive it in as far as it will go. Make sure you do not crack the head by trying to drive the wedge too far. Saw-off the excess of wood even with the head.
- 5- Now place the steel wedge cross-wise on wood wedge and drive it all the way in, using light hammer blows.
- There...just like new !
